The Ethos Deck

This 24-card Euchre deck was designed to provide an easy way to sort through a list of company/organization values and personal virtues. As can be seen at the left, each card in the deck includes one value and one virtue and illustrative quotations.

For Company/Organization Values:

• Distribute decks to associates and have each identify the five core values most in evidence in the work place. Discuss their choices to move toward consensus;

• Use the deck to reflect on aspirational values necessary to move the organization to the next level;

• Deal cards at random during team meetings. Ask members to describe how their value is in evidence in the work the team is doing;

• Draw one card from the deck as the value of the week.

Personal Virtues:

Virtues are values in action. They are those attributes of an individual’s character that demonstrate an interest in right-doing and right-thinking. Reflecting on the virtues that one wishes to develop and practicing those behaviors are a step toward better leadership and a more satisfying life.

Use the Ethos deck to sort through the 24 virtues. Identify those that you wish to work on. Use those cards as the tool for daily reflection on how you did in demonstrating those virtues.

Play Euchre:

Find three friends and enjoy a game. The deck includes four cards for keeping score.
